HERE'S WHAT'S NEW:
12-10-09: Happy holidays, everyone. My usual "Christmas Holiday" page is up; just click to read it. As I said last month, I'm facing some health challenges, then a few weeks ago, I got devastatingly bad news that adversely affects the rest of my life. I'm not ready to talk about it, so no new rant yet. Besides, this is the time of year for peace and love and gratefulness for all God has given us; my problems should not dampen this holiday season. God bless you all. See you in January with a new rant...maybe even a special Christmas "non-rant" before that. Until then, you can always check out the dozens of rants, as well as previous years Christmas "non-rants" on the "Screaming the FISH Cheer" page.

11-6-09: I am undergoing a serious, long-term health problem that requires my immediate attention. Because of this health problem I am unable to do website updates as often as I would like. I DO hope to have a November rant for the "Screaming the FISH Cheer" page soon, though, so please check back frequently.

10-6-09: I ended up back in the hospital the end of September and had to have surgery. I am even more behind on everything than I was before when I was too sick to do much of anything. Please be patient; I will try and update this website, especially the SCREAMING THE FISH CHEER page, as soon as possible.

I'd also like to ask all of you who are able to do so, to please consider donating blood. In less than 35 days, I needed to have 13 units of blood. You never know when it might be you or someone you love who needs a transfusion (or multiple transfusions, as in my case).

WHO IS WRITEROFFTHELAKE?
writeroffthelake is me, Vanessa N Hanko of Geneva-on-the-Lake, Ohio. I started writing in 1976, and within three weeks sold three short stories to three different magazines. Since then I have sold articles as well as short stories to various markets. My writing is not, has never been, and probably never will be, limited to one age group or one genre. Some of the places where my writing has been published are:

* SOUL TEEN * GENESIS * BABY TALK * LIGHTED PATHWAY * INTIMACY * TRUE LOVE * PENNYWHISTLE PRESS * CHICAGO DAILY NEWS * EQUINEWS * JIVE * TIME TO PAUSE * TEACHERS INTERACTION * CROCKETT-DIAL * SECRETS * LOVEWORDS * MOONDANCE *

Some of the things I love (which often turn up in my writing) are:

  • GUYS WITH LONG HAIR I only have two theories about men: a man's hair can never be too long or too blond, and long has priority over blond any day.
  • GENEVA-ON-THE-LAKE Ohio's oldest summer resort Give me a time machine and I'd relive my GOTL summers, especially '68 through '71 (Dad wouldn't allow me to stay alone at GOTL until I was 16 in 1968). I vacationed at GOTL as a kid, worked and lived here in the summers as a teen, then bought a year-round house here in '85. In '94 health reasons forced me to leave, but now I'm back--thank you God!
  • BLUES and ROCK There's two things in life that have to be hard to be good and rock is one of 'em! I LOVE lead guitar licks screaming through my head at ear-splitting volume live and right up at stage (I once had a bass player tell me if I wanted to be any closer I'd have to sit on the stage).
  • HORSES I'm partial to all-over Leopard Appys and blood bay Quarter Horses, although my Appy wasn't an all-over Leopard Appy and my blood bay gelding wasn't a Quarter Horse. Mom always said if the Strip was zoned for horses I'd be in heaven.
  • DOGS In October '07, my first Golden died. I've also owned three Collie bitches and as a child I had a Boxer and others. I started obedience training when I was eleven, but, for me, horse shows always had priority over dog shows.

I can work up some interest in just about anything else, too--EXCEPT football or math.

Everyone's been asking, "Why writer OFF the lake and not writer ON the lake?" Because when I started the first website, I was living "off the lake". Now that I'm back "on the lake", I've kept "writeroffthelake" because I'm "writeroffthelake" on other email accounts and some forums, so "writeroffthelake" I will stay.
The Beaver, Pennsylvania house I lived in from '94-'05, is one of the locations in the movie ADVENTURELAND. I can't wait to see it when it comes out on video. Both interior and exterior of the house look very different today, but here's what the house looked like in 2003 when Mom and I were still living there:
That's Mom in front of the house.
